Dashashwamegh ghat

Description

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main ghat in Banaras(Varanasi) on the Ganga River. It is located close to the Vishwanath Temple and is probably the most spectacular ghat. Two Hindu legends are connected with it: According to one, Lord Brahma built it to welcome Lord Shiva. According to another legend, Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses during Dasa-Ashwamedha yajna done here. The present ghat was made by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the year 1748. A few decades later, Ahilyabahi Holkar, the Queen of Indore reconstructed the ghat in the year 1774. Close to the ghat, overlooking the Ganga lies the Jantar Mantar, The observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur in the year 1737.

Attraction

  • Ganga Aarti (ritual of granting prayer to the Ganges river) is held daily at dusk. Several priests perform this holy ritual by carrying deepam and moving it up and down in a balanced tune of bhajans. Special aartis are held on Tuesdays and on festivals.
